Black Thursday
Piravom Church, in the premises of which happened the most despicable incident in the history of the Malankara Church, the man handling of Augen Mar ThimothiosThe Maundy Thursday in 1942 in Piravom Church scripted one of the most forgettable incidents in history of the Malankara Church. Factionalism was intense in Piravom Church. The administration was in the hands of the Patriarch faction vicars. In such a situation some people from the Orthodox party decided to invite Augen Mar Thimothios, the Diocesan Metropolitan to the Church. The priests who belonged to the Orthodox party in Piravam Church, Alapatt Mathai Kathanar and Erumapetti Thomas Kathanar, went to Piravom Seminary, where Mar Thimothios resides to bring him to the Church. Even though both the priests were of the opinion that the Metropolitan need not come as situation was worse. But by the time they reached Mar Thimothios was dressed and ready for his journey. Seeing this they didn’t tell him anything and brought him to the Church. He was given a warm reception in the Church and after prayers in the Church, departed to his room. The priests of Patriarch factions also took part in the reception and prayers. Thirumeni was supposed to go back in the evening but could not do so because they couldn’t get any transport facility arranged.By the time night fell many people went back from the Church. Since it was Passion Week, some faithful were observing night vigil in the Church. Thirumeni was resting in the room adjacent to the Church and Erumapetti Thomas Kathanar, the Metropolitan’s deacon and a few young men who organized the reception were sleeping outside Thirumeni’s room. Some fanatics of rival faction, who weren’t happy with the presence of Metropolitan in the Church, assembled goons from nearby areas where they had majority saying, “a thief has entered the Church”. A young priest who was ousted by the Metropolitan for indiscipline and later joined the Malankara rite of Mar Ivanios also joined them and encouraged them. The mob of around forty assembled in a nearby toddy shop and the shop owner who was one of their supporters served them enough toddy. When the toddy got to their head they took some sticks and went straight to Piravom Church. They forced open the Metropolitan’s room and threatened him to leave the place. They forced thirumeni out of the room even without allowing him to wear his sandal. The priest and deacons who were outside were beaten up. The goons foul mouthed Thirumeni. Thirumeni could identify many of them. One person stuck thirumeni hard on his back with a stick. Thirumeni fell to the ground. Those goons didn’t leave him yet. They foul mouthed him and escorted him out of the Church and on to the road. They pushed him as he walked along the road. They made him walk all the way till Piravom Seminary. When they reached the seminary they left him there and went away. This infamous incident known as “Piravom beating” is a forgettable chapter in the history of Malankara Church. Similar to that of the Lord who was welcomed into Jerusalem with Hosannas and few days later the same people shouted and mocked him, Thirumeni was warmly welcomed in the evening only to be beaten up in the night. The very next day despite physical pain due to the assault he conducted the Good Friday service. He did not speak a word about the incident in his sermon. Until the unity in 1958, the Orthodox church members used to conduct a protest procession every year from Piravom Church to the Seminary, in the same route that Thirumeni was forced to walk.
Later on Augen Mar Thimothios was appointed as the Principal of Kottayam Seminary, on which he moved his residence to Kottayam. Augen Mar Thimothios was a living martyr for the cause of peace in the Church. He endured sufferings, even more than Vattasseril Thirumeni, for the sake of peace. It is only divine justice and reward for all his sufferings that he was chosen as the Catholicose of the united church which he could lead at least for some years.
